I was able to work with our director of USO of South Texas to help implement a Children Reading Program. Of course I had to include Corpus Christi's very own, Selena Quintanilla-Perez. She is my personal idol and role model who taught me that "the impossible is always possible."
By reading and telling the story of our "La Reina Del Tex-Mex" meaning The Queen of Mexican American is to encourage our youth to not be afraid to cement themselves, take up spaces and break that glass ceiling. Selena was a beautiful example of that. During her debut in the Tejanos Music scene, people often told her that she won't make it in that arena that is mostly male dominated. Selena proved them wrong and even won a Grammy in 1994. All because she dared to DREAM BIG!
I showed them that the song Bidi Bidi Bom Bom was written by Selena while she was on stage rehearsing and singing about itty bitty fishes.
I asked our adorable reader if he would like to have some crayons to take home to color his coloring books that I have gifted everyone with. He politely declined and I told him "it's ok bud, my husband [Casey] will gladly take them home, he's a Marine." Everyone in the room laughed at my silly joke while my husband was sitting with the parents laughing while taking this picture. If you didn't know, everyone likes to joke that Marines like to eat Crayons. It's a silly joke that is well received.
Before this particular event, I have never seen this room before. I knew I that I would want to tell Selena's story and her family journey to success. All because Mr. Quintanilla's had a dream that his children are ready to take on the mainstream American Music Industry. It all started with "A Father's Dream" a book that Mr. Quintanilla wrote.
